Garden Weddings in North Wales: Your Ceremony, Your Way

Celebrant Jane Jones laughing with a bride and groom under a greenery arch, with the title Garden weddings: your ceremony, your way in North Wales

Imagine saying your vows surrounded by flowers, birdsong and the people who mean the world to you… ❤️

Perhaps you’re standing beneath the tree in your parents’ garden. Maybe you’ve found a beautiful outdoor space with views across the North Wales countryside. Or perhaps you’re looking out of your kitchen window thinking, “Could we really have our wedding here?”

For a personal, celebrant-led celebration, you absolutely could!

Garden weddings in North Wales can be romantic, relaxed and full of meaning. And the lovely thing? You can create a ceremony that feels completely yours.

Why a garden wedding can feel so special

Sometimes, the place that means the most to you is closer to home than you think.

The garden where your children play. The lawn where you’ve spent summer evenings together. A family home filled with happy memories.

Just imagine adding your wedding vows to those memories!

A garden ceremony gives you the opportunity to celebrate in a setting with a personal connection. Whether you’re planning a small gathering or inviting a larger circle of family and friends, there’s something lovely about bringing everyone together somewhere that already feels special.

And please don’t worry if your garden doesn’t look like something from a wedding magazine. Your guests are there to celebrate you. A few thoughtful touches and a ceremony filled with love can create a beautiful atmosphere.

Can we have our wedding ceremony in our own garden?

This is where a celebrant-led ceremony gives you so much freedom.

You can hold your personal wedding celebration in your own garden, a family member’s garden or the grounds of a venue, with the owner’s permission and suitable arrangements in place.

There is one practical detail to understand: your celebrant-led ceremony and your legal marriage are separate.

An independent celebrant ceremony such as mine does not itself legally marry you in England and Wales. You’ll need to arrange your legal marriage separately, often through a register office.

An ordinary private garden should not be assumed to be approved for a legal civil wedding. Your local registration service can explain your options, and you can find more information in the government’s marriage ceremony guidance.

With that organised, we can concentrate on creating the garden ceremony you’re excited about!

Garden wedding ideas with a personal touch

The setting is only the beginning. The words, the promises and those little meaningful moments are what make your ceremony yours.

Bring your love story into the ceremony

How did you meet? What made you fall in love? What have you experienced together along the way?

Perhaps there’s a funny story your family still talks about, or a quiet moment that changed everything.

I take time to get to know you both so these details can become part of your ceremony. There can be laughter, happy tears and plenty of moments where your guests think, “That is so them!”

Make promises from the heart

Your vows don’t have to sound formal. They don’t have to be long, either.

They can be romantic, light-hearted, emotional or a lovely mixture of all three. What matters is that you mean them.

And if you have absolutely no idea where to start, that’s perfectly fine. I can help you find the words.

Include your favourite people

Would your children like a special role? Is there someone you’d love to ask to share a reading?

A garden wedding can offer lovely opportunities to involve the people closest to you. They might bring your rings, share a few words or join you in a symbolic ritual.

We can also include a gentle tribute to someone who cannot be with you. Sometimes, a few carefully chosen words mean so much.

Add a meaningful wedding ritual

Perhaps you love the idea of handfasting, with ribbons chosen to represent your relationship.

Or you might like a unity sand ceremony, bringing different colours together as a symbol of your lives joining.

A symbolic planting moment could also feel particularly at home in a garden setting, giving you something to nurture and enjoy in the years ahead.

There’s no pressure to include anything that doesn’t feel right. We’ll explore the ideas together and choose what means something to you.

A little planning makes all the difference

Now, as lovely as it is to imagine sunshine and a gentle breeze, we do need to have a chat about the practical side!

Have a lovely plan for the weather

Here in North Wales, it pays to be prepared.

A suitable indoor space or properly installed marquee can give you somewhere comfortable if the weather changes. Think about sunshine and shade as well as rain, and make sure your alternative has enough room for everyone.

Choose somewhere you can still picture yourselves happily saying your vows. That way, you’ll feel more relaxed whatever the forecast brings.

Help your guests feel comfortable

Walk through the space as though you’re arriving as a guest.

Is there an easy route to the ceremony? Will anyone need help over uneven ground? Are toilets nearby? Is there comfortable seating for those who need it?

It’s easy to get caught up in flowers and decorations, but these thoughtful details help your loved ones enjoy the day.

Let everyone hear those lovely words

Your vows deserve to be heard!

For a larger garden wedding, a microphone may be helpful. It’s worth checking the sound in your chosen spot, including any music you’re planning to use.

Wind and background noise can make more difference than you expect.

Think about what your garden needs

If you’re celebrating at home, consider parking, power, toilets, supplier access and the space needed for your covered alternative.

Speak to your suppliers early about their requirements, and check any permissions or insurance arrangements relevant to your plans.

You don’t need every answer straight away. Working through the details early gives you more time to enjoy the exciting bits.

Is a garden wedding a cheaper option?

It can be, but it depends on your plans.

Using a garden may save on venue hire, while bringing in shelter, furniture, toilets and catering facilities can add to the cost.

Make a list of everything you’ll need and compare the full picture before deciding. A small, simple celebration may work beautifully in your space, while a larger gathering may need more arrangements than you first imagined.

Choose a garden because you love the idea and it works for your day.

A few garden wedding questions

Does our garden need a wedding licence?

For an independent celebrant-led celebration that is separate from your legal marriage, the garden does not need approval as a civil marriage venue. You’ll still need the owner’s permission and should check any other requirements for your event. The legal marriage has separate requirements.

What if it rains during our outdoor ceremony?

We’ll have an agreed alternative ready. Planning the layout and practical details beforehand helps everyone know what to do if the ceremony needs to move under cover.

Can we have a small garden wedding?

Absolutely! A small gathering can feel wonderfully personal. You can keep things simple, include the people closest to you and give yourselves time to enjoy the moment.

Can we include religious or spiritual elements?

Yes. Your celebrant-led celebration can include beliefs, readings and traditions that matter to you. We can talk about how to bring them together in a thoughtful and meaningful way.
